  • Water Stewardship Presentations

The following case studies were presented at the Feb. 14, 2011 meeting of the California Roundtable on Water and Food Supply to assist members in gathering data on the challenges and factors for success in implementing ag water stewardship solutions.

  • Recommendations for the CCST Water Action Plan

Apr. 2011 On April 29, CRWFS submitted a set of ag water stewardship recommendations to the California Council on Science and Technology (CCST) for consideration in the Water Action Plan. The Roundtable believes these recommendations are important research priorities for the future of agricultural water management in California, and requested that CCST and the Water Action Team consider including the recommendations in the final Phase 2 CCST report to the Governor and the state legislature.

  • Agricultural Water Stewardship Recommendations

Jun. 2011 On June 22, the California Roundtable on Water and Food Supply released a set of recommendations to shift thinking and spur appropriate action to balance the water needs of both farms and aquatic ecosystems. Based on the concept of water stewardship, the group has called for water management approaches to be grounded in local environmental and socio-economic conditions and for efforts to optimize on-farm use while serving needs in broader watershed. To advance this framework, the Roundtable has issued specific recommendations for state agencies, water suppliers, local water management groups, the agricultural community, and the research community. Roundtable Development

  • Roundtable formed

June 29, 2010 Ten leaders gathered today to kick off the California Roundtable on Water and Food Supply, a new multi-stakeholder effort launched at the recommendation of the California Roundtable on Agriculture and the Environment and funded by the Specialty Crop Block Grant Program administered by the California Department of Food and Agriculture. The effort aims to build strong relationships between the specialty crop sector and public interests to reduce polarization and increase support for sound water management on farms. The Roundtable will generate proposals that build farm water security while addressing public and environmental needs. The Roundtable will create a space where thoughtful and committed leaders can engage in a facilitated, off-the-record process to draw out creativity and wisdom, and generate new ideas. The founding group reviewed results of informational interviews with key actors at the intersection of water and agriculture, and crafted an approach, theory of change, initial topic and Roundtable membership list. The group included Kim Delfino, Defenders of Wildlife; Mark Rentz, Association of California Water Agencies; Juliet Christian-Smith, Pacific Institute; David Runsten, Community Alliance with Family Farmers; Cornelius Gallagher, Bank of America Merrill Lynch; Rita Schmidt Sudman, Water Education Foundation; Kamyar Guivetchi, California Department of Water Resources; Steve Shaffer, Environmental Consulting for Agriculture; Jovita Pajarillo, US EPA Region 9; and Casey Walsh Cady, California Department of Food and Agriculture. Ag Innovations Network will facilitate the Roundtable process.

  • CRWFS tackles on-farm water management

September 2010 The California Roundtable on Water and Food Supply selected its first topic—sound on-farm water management. In the coming months, Roundtable members will be investigating the role of agricultural water stewardship in farm water security and the broader role of agriculture in watershed management. Final recommendations emerging from this process will be posted on this web page. Please check back in Summer 2011 for these results.
